Morro Branco beach Brazil
SUBURBAN BEACHES of Fortaleza
A bit further out of the central area of Fortaleza, you can find magnificent beaches, highly recommended for tourists. So, if you have the opportunity, be sure to visit the beaches listed below.
Morro Branco beach Brazil – the maze of sand cliffs
Morro Branco is a beach located in the city of Beberibe – Ceará, about 90km from Fortaleza and it is a good choice for those who are willing to do a one-day round trip from Fortaleza or to spend a weekend away from the capital. There are many hotels/lodges in the area and a good infrastructure for tourists.
In addition to the incredible sea of greenish-blue shades, the stunning terracotta red sand cliffs form a real maze along the coast, in contrast with the white sand dunes, giving it an impressive and peculiar look – often used as a backdrop for soap operas, national and international films.
Morro Branco’s cliff labyrinth emerged from the action of wind and erosion. Morro Branco got its name (White Hill) because, when you see the city in the distance, the first thing you notice is the white hill and its lighthouse. In fact, Morro Branco’s Lighthouse is also a tourist attraction, as when you’re on top of it, it is possible to have a great view of the whole beach, of Fortaleza and even enjoy a beautiful sunset.
Morro Branco beach has also a famous Handicraft Centre, where you can find the best-made silicography pieces in the world, some of which are exported for sales and exhibitions. Silicography is the art of drawing with coloured sand.
Praia das Fontes – freshwater showers
Located 92 km from Fortaleza, between Morro Branco and Uruarú Beaches, Praia das Fontes (Fontes Beach), as well as Morro Branco, has beautiful terracotta red sand cliffs along the coast. However, there is a special bonus: from the underside of these cliffs a warm, sweet and crystalline water, originating from groundwater flows.
These streams also form refreshing freshwater showers for those just out of the sea. When the tide is low, it is possible to visit an existing cave on the cliffs; however, do not attempt to go in it when the tide is high.
You can choose to either make a one-day round trip from Fortaleza or to spend a weekend in order to better explore this beautiful region and its unique charms.
